For the group exhibition Inspiratio-Imitari, we were asked to draw inspiration from the original works of Alphonse Mucha, infamous for his visualisation of muses. We were free to create our own interpretation, but when I looked at his artworks, the first thing that came to my mind was that the perception of beauty back in the time was flat and didn’t offer me more than a single utilised feature femme fatale kind of portrait. Is that how they saw the concept of beauty? Is that how we still see it now? I didn’t want to critique but rather explore the everlasting stigma his work carries. And suddenly, the message was clear to me. Your standard is not my standard. Your beauty is not mine.
